 Retail Puppies FAQ

http://www.cuhumane.org/puppymills/puppymills-faq.html

These are PuppyMills. This is where puppies in Pet Stores come from. Do not buy from Pet Stores. Stop the demand. Dogs in mills are kept in deplorable conditions.

What is a puppy mill, and what is the difference between a puppy mill and a dog breeder?

There are as many definitions for the term 'puppy mill' as there are hours in a day.

Typically, puppy mills are large dog-breeding facilities that mass produce puppies for the pet store industry in an environment where financial gain overrides any concern about the dogs being bred or the quality of puppies being born.

Puppies are wholesaled to brokers (like Hunte, Lambriar, Tracy's Crittersville, Pine Spring Pets, etc.) or their agents, who sell the puppies directly to pet stores.

USDA-licensed kennels, also known as commercial kennels or dealers, are nothing more than puppy mills. Today, more and more advocates refer to them as 'canine factory farms' primarily because of the intensive confinement that's imposed upon the animals who are kept solely for breeding purposes.

Puppy mills are easily identified:
• Dogs are bred exclusively for profit
• Housing consists of wire or hutch-type cages
• Shelter from the elements is inadequate or non-existent
• Little to no veterinary care nor grooming is provided
• Inferior food products are utilized
• Basic needs, such as water and food, are contaminated
• Socialization among the animals is prohibited
• No exercise is provided

Dog breeders, even some calling themselves 'reputable' breeders - including backyard breeders - can also function as puppy mills. Many of these less-than-stellar breeders often keep dogs caged or crated most of their lives, breeding them for profit.

Recently, an increase in breeder complaints filed with us (NJCAPSA) has revealed many of these so-called reputable breeders hiding behind AKC-registered dogs or glossy magazine ads when, in actuality, they are nothing more than typical puppy mills as described above.

A true tell-tale sign that SHOULD raise flags in the mind of the consumer would be the inability to see the parents of the puppy.
In contrast, small scale dog breeders commonly sell puppies through classified ads, over the internet or by 'word-of-mouth.' They rarely sell to pet stores unless they are flying under the 'regulation radar.'

There is no excuse for the abuse of mills to continue. Boycott stores that sell puppies.

No heat. Water frozen. No toys. No treats. No human interaction.
Only wire to stand on twenty four hours a day, seven days a weeks... forever.
Animals so frustrated they chew at the wire that imprisons them.
Not even a name to be called by... for they are "just a number."
This is the true cost of your Pet Store Puppy who will probably be sick soon.

Row upon row of wire cages resembling rabbit hutches. A hound cringes in the shade in the cage on the right; note the pile of feces between food bowl and water bucket.

Up for sale to the highest bidder at a recent dog auction. This maltese so she can have more puppies for the Pet stores. Look at the shape she is in.

A corgi with pups in outside pen. Temp was 12 degrees that day. Note size of cage compared to length of dog

Rivers of effulent, urine, feces, and water runs off from the dog pens

All three of these dogs were rescued from the Mills. Look at our before and after page of our rescue dogs.

How you can help. When looking for a dog adopt from a rescue or shelter. Donate your time, funds or items to a rescue or shelter.

Please don't ever buy your puppy from a pet shop. 90% of the puppies in pet shops come from these puppy mills. A lot of the puppies die on the way to the pet store, from diseases they already had, not being fed on route(sometimes up to a week), and excessive excrement. There is much more to tell but I hope you get my point ----->DON'T EVER BUY A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO BREAK THE CYCLE. PLEASE TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW SO THAT THEY CAN HELP US.
